RE: Onan 6.5 Loping

I started the generator and ran the gov by hand and it didn't miss a beat?? So now thinking that the spring may be weak as swat-cop suggested or maybe there is an electronic component that has a flaky connection??? I will probably find the problem, the "last place" I look :W Jon...

RE: Onan 6.5 Loping

Did the tune up and changed the in-line fuel filter, but still lopes so the next step will be to fill up the tank and see if it was a quality in the gas issue or it could be the electronic fuel pump not keeping up but usually they either work or don't work.... runs fine when running the motor home till I kick in the air conditioner (tried both front and back a/c) also tried just running the back a/c not plugging in the rest of the coach... Jon...

RE: Onan 6.5 Loping

Doug, I finally took a couple vacation days, so will probably give the generator a good tune up.. the starter is on the back of the generator and mine is a bugger to get at.. it doesn't slide out but will drop down on a couple hinges, but you have to take the exhaust off and is a pain.. so used the mirror and go-by-feel method to pull the starter out last fall and just cleaned up the armateur and brushes and put it back together and I was lucky... worked ever since... thanks again for the reply..... Jon...

RE: Onan 6.5 Loping

thanks Tom for the quick reply.... I cleaned the carb and filter, I would think there would be an in-line fuel filter but there doesn't appear to be.... Think I might just change out the fuel line in-case there happens to be a small air leak that when more fuel is needed it may be sucking air??? (kind of like some politicians :B )

Onan 6.5 Loping

Wondering if any one has experienced an Onan Generator Emarld III 6.5 that when under little demand it runs fine, but when I kick in the rear air conditioner it appears to lope up and down?? It's a 1988, but has always worked fine, just have not had too much demand for using it this summer... but run it twice a month to exercise it..... any help would be appreciated.... thanks.... Jon....

RE: WOW, what a shock!

Also, check your speedometer against a GPS.. there can be a considerable amount of difference between your actual speed and indicated speed... some differences are as much as 15%....

RE: upgrade to - Gear Vendors or New 4 speed Tranny

I have the 460 in an 89 Fleetwood limited and also have the GV and really believe in it. Always have a gear and it drops approximately 400 rpm when engaged. GV also has a lifetime replacement after warranty of 750 bucks... Mine is a carburated 460 with the C6 tranny.

RE: Cannot get Onan genny to start

I would disconnect the gas supply hose and get another short gas hose and put it in a gas can to see if it will pick up the fuel and run the genny. If it does then it is either a crack in the hose or like previous post make sure that there is at least 1/4 tank full of gas as the pickup in the gas tank is up a ways from the bottom so that you do not run your gas tank out of fuel. If it does not start and it is taking up gas in the line, then it is spark.. pull spark plug and ground it to the genny chasis, but be careful to make sure there is not any fumes that could ignite.. turn engine over and see if there is spark... i guess the best advice is if you don't feel comfortable, get someone who is (local mechanic)....... electric fuel pumps are usually pressure related, so if it feels negative pressure it kicks on, kinda like keeping the line charged when there is power applied. so still could be the pressure switch or control board or usually the ground to the control board is questionable...

RE: CB Radio Install

It is recommended to have radios turned off when starting a vehicle, especially diesel (if you would look at the voltage on an oscilloscope you would be amazed when a starter engages... the voltage drop is the hardest single environment for electronic parts, such as CB's...) Jon

RE: Medora, Mt Rushmore area places for RV?

Plan on spending 4-5 days in the Black Hills, probably would check with the KOA between Hill City and Mt. Rushmore and use that as base; then 2 days in Medora. Custer Park is great for all.. Mt. Rushmore something the kids will always remember.. 1880 train ride... Deadwood more for the adults.... Spearfish has the Passion Play.. Cosmos for adults and kids... Reptile Garden... Eye of the Needles... Wind Cave and other caves... Terry Peak Chair lift..... Horse trail rides right out of the KOA... Sylvan lake for swimming... Trout Haven for kids and rainbow trout fishing.... Hot Springs.... really unlimited once you get there... then Medora has the evening play and pitchfork fondue supper... the painted Canyon.. old shops.... Elk Herd.... Really a great family trip.... you and your family will really enjoy it.... Jon....

RE: over under drive

You actually bypass the GV and use the standard transmission as somewhat of a brake... as the GV is an Over Drive and lowers the RPM and when shifting out of the GV your RPM's increase, essentially slowing down momentum by using the engine...

RE: over under drive

I did fracture one of the gears when in soft soil and having to back and forth the RV to get it into a campsite. I lost reverse and had to make sure that I really thought through all manuvering on the way home, thankfully home was only 120 miles away. I had left the GV in automatic mode, but did not think at the time that reverse would be influenced... well evidently it is.... mechanic originally thought it was the main C6 tranny so rebuilt that.... the phone call was interesting... Jon I put the tranny back in and it has the same problem... He called GV and had them ship out another GV unit... had it in 3 days and put it in.... worked great ever since... so at least now I know the main and the GV trannies are in good shape.... the mechanic did give me a break on the pricing of the tranny that really did not need to be rebuilt... lucky me..... Have fun, you will like the GV.... Jon....

RE: over under drive

one more... the Gear Vendor also works as a tranny brake.. so when you want to slow down when below say 50 mph shift out of the gear vendor and it will use engine via the tranny to assist in slowing down.... like downshifting....

RE: over under drive

Hello Jim, I also have the gear vendor over/under drive. It works great, saves some fuel and gives you power where ever you need it as it really is a secondary transmission that splits gears. Use the manual mode, as it is easier on the system, so use the button on the floor to shift into overdrive when you get up in speed. I have the manuals, but also called gear vendor to talk about the system (also warranteed for life, if it ever breaks down they will replace it for 750 bucks after the initial warantee period) This is their website url and they have an 800 number. I also have the 460 Ford but without the Banks and have really not needed the Banks with the Gear Vendor...Give them a call and I am sure they would send you a manual... Jon.....
